2027 Color Trends: How to Bring Color Into Your Home Without Starting Over

Color trends are always changing.
And honestly? I love it.
As a designer, I enjoy seeing where color, materials and interiors are headed each year. It's inspiring to see the new palettes come together and imagine all the possibilities.
But there's something I want homeowners to remember:
Your home isn't a trend. It's an evolving environment, all your own.
You don't need to completely redecorate your home every time a new Color of the Year is announced. In fact, I believe the best interiors are designed to evolve over time.
So let's take a look at where color is headed and, more importantly, how you can bring some of that inspiration into your home without starting over.
From Warm Neutrals to Nature-Inspired Color
For 2026, warm and earthy neutrals continued to make a strong statement. Sherwin-Williams selected Universal Khaki SW 6150 as its 2026 Color of the Year, reflecting the continued interest in warm, comfortable and versatile neutrals.
Now we're beginning to see the direction for 2027 emerge.
Sherwin-Williams' 2027 forecast, Rewild, brings together nature-inspired colors, richer tones and more personality. Its 2027 Color of the Year, Celery SW 6421, is a soft yellow-green.
Behr is also looking to nature with Grounded, a deeper mossy olive.
And we're still waiting to see what other paint brands will announce as their 2027 Colors of the Year.

Your Home Isn't a Trend
When a new color becomes popular, it's easy to start thinking:
Do I need to repaint?
Is my furniture outdated?
Should I change everything?
My answer is usually: not necessarily.
If you've invested in a beautiful sofa, dining table, cabinetry or other large pieces that you love, you shouldn't feel like you need to replace them because a new color is having a moment.
Instead, I recommend keeping your larger purchases and renovation items timeless and having fun bringing trends into your home through smaller, more flexible accents.
This gives your home room to evolve.
5 Easy Ways to Bring Trending Colors Home
1. Add Color Through Pillows
Pillows are one of my favorite ways to experiment with a new color.
If your room is primarily neutral, introduce a few pillows in a new color family. A soft green, earthy olive, warm rust or muted blue can completely change the feeling of a room without changing the foundation.
And when you're ready for something different, they're easy to switch.
2. Let Artwork Do the Work
Artwork is another beautiful way to introduce color. Note the soft muted green of the color pallet.
Rather than choosing a piece because it perfectly matches your room, look for something that brings in a color you're naturally drawn to.
You might find that a new piece of art introduces just enough green, blue, rust or gold to inspire the rest of the room.
And don't worry about everything matching.
A home should feel collected, not coordinated.
3. Try a Lamp or Accent Piece
A lamp, vase, bowl, sculpture, or other decorative object can introduce a trend color in a small but noticeable way.
This is especially helpful if you're curious about a color but aren't ready to make a big commitment.
Live with it.
See how it feels in your space.
You may discover that you love it.
Or you may discover that you don't.
Either way, you've learned something about your own style without making a major investment.
4. Bring in a Small Piece of Furniture
If you're ready to make a slightly bigger statement, consider a smaller piece of furniture.
An accent chair, side table, bench or painted cabinet can introduce personality without taking over the room.
This is a great opportunity to have a little fun.
Your larger, foundational pieces can remain timeless while smaller pieces bring in the colors and styles you're currently enjoying.
5. Shop Your Own Home
Before you buy anything, take a look around.
You may already own the perfect piece.
Maybe it's artwork tucked away in another room.
Maybe it's a throw blanket you've forgotten about.
Maybe it's a vase, pottery piece or decorative object that suddenly looks completely different when placed somewhere new.
Good design isn't always about buying more. Sometimes it's about seeing what you already have differently.
Let Trends Inspire You, Not Dictate Your Home
This is where I think the Color of the Year conversation gets really fun.
You don't have to love every color.
You don't have to use every trend.
And you certainly don't have to change your home every year.
Instead, let trends introduce you to colors, materials and ideas you might not have considered before.
Maybe Celery inspires you to add a little more green.
Maybe Grounded makes you realize you love earthy olive tones.
Maybe another 2027 Color of the Year will be the one that catches your eye.
Take the inspiration and make it your own.
Build a Home That Can Evolve
The homes we love most aren't necessarily the ones that look like they came straight out of a showroom.
They're the ones that tell a story.
They change as we change.
They collect memories, artwork, furniture and objects along the way. They become more personal over time.
That's why I love the idea of designing a home with a timeless foundation and room to evolve.
Choose the pieces you're going to live with for years carefully.
Then have some fun with everything else.
Change the pillows.
Move the artwork.
Try a new lamp.
Bring home a color you've never used before.
Small changes can make a surprisingly big difference.
A great example of a timeless kitchen design that is stunning exactly the way it is. However, if added color is desired, it can be added to with florals, accessories, and artwork. The goal in a renovation is to design a kitchen that can stand the test of time.
