From Concept to Celebration: Helping to Design the Wunderbar at Wurstfest

Some projects are more than just design—they’re a celebration of memories, community, and bringing a beloved tradition to life. The Wunderbar at Wurstfest in New Braunfels, Texas is one of those projects.

One of the original concepts for the Wurstfest Wunderbar.

Wurstfest has always been close to my heart. Growing up, it was one of my favorite times of the year. The laughter, the music, and of course, the food, sausage on a stick and crispy potato pancakes with applesauce and cinnamon and made lasting memories. Now, sharing these experiences with my daughter and creating new traditions together makes Wurstfest even more special.

When I had the opportunity to help design the new Wunderbar, I wanted it to feel like a bridge between the past and the present. This project was about thoughtful interior design, space planning, and honoring local heritage while creating a space that feels warm, inviting, and fun for everyone.

It was a team effort from start to finish. Volunteers and professionals worked together to turn the vision into reality. My role focused on helping with the layout, materials, lighting, and the overall look and feel of the building. Every choice was made to combine modern functionality with historic charm, making sure visitors could feel the magic and nostalgia of Wurstfest from the moment they walk in.

One of my favorite parts was incorporating the original bricks from the previous building. Using those materials gave the space a real connection to the past and reflected the strength and spirit of the New Braunfels community.

We also leaned on the past for thematic and environmental design. Every detail, from the rooflines to the textures and finishes inside the bar, was inspired by the original building and the German-Texan architecture that shaped our town. The bar design even draws inspiration from the original structures on site, with German-style details that give the space character and charm.

Watching the Wunderbar come to life from 3D Concepts to a lively, bustling space has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a true testament to teamwork, collaboration, and how thoughtful design can shape experiences.

Every year, as the lights glow and music fills the air, I’m reminded that design isn’t just about walls and finishes, it’s about creating spaces where memories are made. And as I enjoy a plate of potato pancakes with my daughter, I know the Wurstfest is much more than a collection building, or a yearly German festival, it’s part of a story that will keep growing, one festival at a time.
